My second fav that day was an identically dressed Vintage Select White Penguin. It’s a lot of money so it’s worth the extra expense to evaluate em all. My suggestion is save the money, take a trip to Streetsounds or Wildwood, or a similar place that has a bunch of em and play em all. I’ve known dyed in the wool Tele and Strat guys who got rid of thier 6120 sized Gretsches because they just couldn’t get comfortable on em.

It’s a big ol box and even if your used to a big acoustic, sometimes it’s just too much to deal with.

I can always use another guitar for that stuff.Īll that said.I find despite how wonderful the Falcon is half the time I prefer something else like my modded Pro Jet or my parts Tele, purely for convenience sake. That’s not an issue for me as I’m not really that kind of player, and only crank the gain once and a while. But if you like higher gain and lots of volume you will get the feedback issues associated with a really large hollowbody. That doesn’t bother me much even tho I’m not a big guy, 5’7” 170#. No regrets whatsoever.īut.it’s a really big guitar. To me that day it was the best sounding guitar in the store, It’s beautiful, the workmanship is superior, and the tones are awesome. Didn’t see myself with such bling but the tone won out. The Falcon won the day purely based on its sound. I made a special trip to NYC to go to Streetsounds and try out a wide selection of Prolines, Jets, Penguins, 6120, Annie’s, and more. I own a Vintage Select Falcon, bought it new from Streetsounds a couple of years ago. I want to get a fat, warm memorable tone.ĮDIT: Just to clarify, I'm talking about Gretsch White Falcon VINTAGE SELECT G6136T-59VS I want a versatile gear to play rock, country, folk, jazz, blues, metal, everything. I want to buy something that will leave me wanting to play more and more every day. The most I've ever paid for a guitar was exactly $200. What's different? Is there a 'meaningful' difference? Will I get a better tone? Does it play that much nicer? Am I just paying for the 'history' that's behind it or the Neil Young association? Is it worth it? Is the White Falcon THAT much better than a G5420T? ($1200 vs $5000). But going by the specs, the tone I know from Neil Young, the craftsmanship of the guitar (at least in the photos), and just how much more beautiful it looks than a G5420T, I know that I so badly want a White Falcon (or even a Black Falcon would be fine because it's nearly $800 cheaper). Now, a month has passed and I cannot find any shops within 150 miles that has the White Falcon available for trying in person. I came across the White Falcon, something I had never even considered before. So the other day, I basically threw a dice and decided to get a G5420, and just when I was trying to finalize the purchase, I decided to do one 'final' browsing of other models and. Now after trying both and seeing how much I like the way they both play and sound, I'm completely confused as to which one's going to be the better choice. I just want to go back to the old days of locking myself up playing for 8 hours straight and feeling like I want more because I was so much in love with playing my gear.įirst wanted to get a Streamliner, but decided to wait and save more to get either a G5420T or G5422T. I just think that I now really deserve a good guitar, because I feel less inspired to play my guitar. I have recorded albums, I have toured, etc. I've always played very, very cheap guitar. I have NEVER owned a premium/high-quality guitar. For the past 5-6 years I've been obsessed with getting a Gretsch. I've been playing for over a decade now and have never been able to afford any guitar that went above $200.
